About Fortress Merge

A defence game with a merge puzzle at its centre. Matching units are combined into stronger ones, and those units are what hold the line when a wave arrives. The two halves compete for the same thing: merging takes board space and time that the wave already on its way may not leave you. Choosing between a stronger unit now and more units at once is the decision the whole game turns on, and it is the one that both wins runs and ends them.

How to Play

Drag matching units together to combine them into a stronger version. Position your units on the board to cover the routes enemies take. Waves arrive whether or not you are ready. You can keep merging during one, but units being moved are not defending. Survive the wave, take what it earns you, and rebuild before the next.

Good to know

The longest-running game in the catalogue in terms of a single session โ€” waves build on each other, so a run is something you settle into rather than dip in and out of. Drag-based control works on both desktop and phone. Best played somewhere you will not be interrupted mid-wave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I merge everything as soon as I can?

Not always. Merging leaves you with fewer units on the board, and one strong unit covers less ground than several weaker ones. Against a wide wave, numbers can hold better than strength.

Can I merge while a wave is attacking?

Yes, but anything you are moving is not defending while you move it. It is worth it for a quick merge and rarely worth it for a long one.

What happens if the board fills up?

You cannot take new pieces, which effectively ends the run. Keeping a few slots free is the habit that separates a long run from a short one.
